Paul Smee, Director General
 

Paul joined the Council of Mortgage Lenders as Director General in August 2011. He was until April, Chief Executive of UK Payments, a post which he held for six years. He set up, and was the first Chief Executive of the UK Payments Council, which sets strategy for collaborative payments in the UK. He was very involved with the introduction of the Faster Payments Service in 2008, the first new payment system in the UK for 25 years; and in the production of the UK’s National Payments Plan.

Before payments, Paul was the first Director General of the Association of IFAs, the representative body for the community of independent advisors which was formed in 1999. He also was instrumental in the formation of the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries.

During his earlier career, Paul has worked for the London Stock Exchange, the Association of British Insurers and the Independent Television Commission. He started his working life at the Department of Trade and Industry.

Bob Pannell, Chief economist

A member of the senior management team, Bob has overall responsibility for the CML's economics, statistics and forecasting work. He writes a monthly market commentary, as well as contributing widely to CML News & Views and other published outputs. Bob works very closely with CML colleagues to ensure that policy and PR work is underpinned by rigorous, clear and relevant analysis.

Sue Anderson, Head of member and external relations

Sue and her team are responsible for the CML's relationships with CML members and associates, external stakeholders, the media and parliamentarians. Sue has written widely on mortgage market issues and is spokesperson for the CML.

Bernard Clarke, Communications manager

Bernard writes widely on mortgage market issues both for CML and external publications. He edits the fortnightly newsletter, CML News & Views, and produces the CML's annual report and Yearbook. Bernard is also a CML media spokesman.

Jackie Bennett OBE, Head of policy

Jackie has overall responsibility for the policy work at the CML. This comprises lobbying government on relevant issues and representing the CML to government, regulators and other stakeholders. She has led on a number of key areas for the CML including NewBuy, EU Directive, mortgage regulation, arrears and possessions, HIPS, adverse credit lending, valuation, environment issues, equity release and low-cost home-ownership. She was awarded the OBE in the Queen's birthday honours list in 2010 for services to the financial services industry.

Nick Wood, Senior policy adviser

Nick Wood is a senior policy adviser at the Council of Mortgage Lenders. He leads on a range of issues, including arrears and possessions, buy-to-let, elements of credit risk and Northern Ireland. Nick has previously held a variety of policy roles within both the public and private sector.

 Jon Saunders, Senior policy adviser (funding)

Jon Saunders is a senior policy advisor at the Council of Mortgage Lenders. He leads on issues related to the funding conditions, both retail and wholesale, for mortgage lenders and regulation where it relates to capital and liquidity.

He previously worked in the City for a variety of investment banks, included UBS and Dresdner Kleinwort. He graduated from Loughborough University in 1992 with a first class honours degree in Banking and Finance and subsequently gained an MSc from London University (Birkbeck) in Sports Management.

 Lorena Esposito-Storey, Senior policy adviser

Lorena has been a policy professional for over 10 years and has worked in both the public and private sectors in a variety of institutions including think tanks, local government, and membership bodies. Lorena is also a chartered accountant and chartered tax adviser. Lorena has lead responsibility at the CML for work on MMR, conduct regulation, and interest-only mortgages.

 John Marr, Senior policy adviser

John Marr is a senior policy adviser at the Council of Mortgage Lenders. He leads on a range of issues, including social/affordable housing and low cost home ownership; environmental issues such as flooding and the Green Deal as well as policy issues particular to Wales. John was previously a policy adviser to the Local Government Association and has worked extensively in the public sector.

 Jennifer Bourne, Senior policy adviser

Jennifer Bourne is a senior policy adviser at the Council of Mortgage Lenders. She leads on a range of issues, including financial crime, legal and valuation matters and NewBuy, MI New Home and NewBuy Cymru. Jennifer has previously held a variety of policy roles within both the public and private sector.

 Julian Wadley, Press officer

Julian Wadley works in the media relations team at the Council of Mortgage Lenders. He writes articles on mortgage and housing market issues, and is the first point of contact for all journalists interested in the CML.

Julian moved into the financial services sector recently following a similar role in the technology sector.

Nigel Terrington, CML Chairman - The Paragon Group of Companies PLC

Nigel has been Paragon's Chief Executive for the last 17 years, previously holding the positions of Treasurer and Finance Director since joining the group in 1987.

Nigel and his management team, which has been in place for over 20 years, have led the company successfully through two recessions, established the Group as leading specialist lenders and in 2012 Paragon reported record profits, cementing Paragon as a leading business in its sector.

Nigel and Nick Keen, Paragon's Finance Director, are currently the longest-serving CEO and CFO team in the FTSE250.

Nigel is passionate about Paragon and ensuring the specialist lenders, together with the importance of finance for the UK's private rented sector, are heard at industry level. He is Chairman of the Council of Mortgage Lenders and is also a member of HM Treasury's Home Finance Forum. In the past, he has held various high profile industry positions such as Chairman of the Finance and Leasing Association ('FLA') Consumer Finance Division, a Board member of the FLA and an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers.
