CML reveals highest March lending figure ever
23 Apr 07

Gross mortgage lending reached a March record of £31.3 billion according to the latest data from the Council of Mortgage Lenders. This was a leap of 22% from February's lending figure of £25.5 billion and is 10% higher than the £28.3 billion of lending reached in March last year.
Commenting on today's data CML Director General Michael Coogan said:
"This is the highest-ever March lending figure. It is clear that many borrowers are taking sensible steps to shelter against higher mortgage costs. There is still a question mark over just how strong mortgage lending will be over the coming months as the prospect of higher interest rates takes its toll on demand. But, we continue to expect mortgage lending to reach a record £360 billion this year."
Notes to editors
1. The Council of Mortgage Lenders' members are banks, building societies and other lenders who together undertake around 98% of all residential mortgage lending in the UK. There are 11.6 million mortgages in the UK, with loans worth over £1 trillion.
2. The next gross lending press release will be published on Monday 21 May.
