Asbestos

Asbestos can be found in a large number of residential properties, particularly where built before the year 2000. However, if you think asbestos may be in your home or the home you are about to buy, don’t panic! The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advises that if asbestos is in good condition and showing no signs of damage it poses no threat and should be left alone. This is still the case even when future building work is planned, provided that contractors are warned of its presence. There is no danger unless fibres are released and inhaled into the lungs. If asbestos material is more than slightly damaged, or if the borrower is going to make changes to their home that might disturb it, repair or removal by a professional is needed.
Further information on asbestos for members of the public can be found on the Health & Safety Executive website and the RICS website. HSE also have a telephone InfoLine – 08701 545500
