Electronic conveyancing

Last updated 26/09/2008: any recent updates in this colour.

Background

On 13 October 2003, the Land Registration Act 2002 (2002 Act) and Land Registration Rules 2003 (2003 Rules) came into force. The 2002 Act and 2003 Rules completely replace the statutory framework for land registration set out in the Land Registration Act 1925. The 2002 Act and 2003 Rules provide the cornerstone for electronic conveyancing by creating a legal framework for transferring and creating interests in registered land by electronic means. The Land Registry (LR) is responsible for developing an electronic conveyancing system. Under the system it will be possible to execute formal documents electronically via a secure electronic communications network.  The LR will control access to the network and what changes can be made to the register.
